Kids in Museums Takeover Day, which this year takes place on Friday 20 November, is an annual day on which museums, libraries, archives, galleries, historic sites and arts organisations are taken over by children and young people who are given meaningful, powerful and decision-making roles. From curators to cafe staff, they are in charge. The children participate fully in the work of the organisation, making decisions and providing valuable contributions.
Last year’s Takeover Day was the biggest event in the UK to include children and young people and it is growing. Over 145 cultural organisations took part in England and around 4,500 children and young people. Children take over organisations in various ways, not all of them public facing. They welcome visitors, create trails, curate exhibitions, advise on youth panels and answer the phones
